Watergum’s Cane Toad Tadpole Trap is ideal for use in private waterways like dams, streams and ponds

It can catch hundreds of tadpoles every time it is set and can be reused countless times

How does it work?

It’s all thanks to Mother Nature

Cane Toad tadpoles are attracted to the smell of Cane Toad eggs

The lure smells like Cane Toad eggs which attracts the tadpoles into the trap

The lure is only of interest to Cane Toad tadpoles so other species are not tempted into the trap

HOW TO GET TRAPPING

The trap is reusable and can trap thousands of Cane Toad tadpoles which is more effective than getting rid of one adult toad at a time.

There are a few simple things to remember:

  • First, this system works on Cane Toad tadpoles rather than the toads themselves!
  • The trap is used during breeding season – that’s September to April in SEQ and a bit longer up north.
  • Always check there are Cane Toad tadpoles present in the water before you set the trap.
  • The trap works best when left in the water for 4-8 hours.
  • To reuse, clean the trap with a mild detergent and reset.
  • Leaving the trap for longer can reduce the level of catch as the trapped tadpoles send out signals to warn others to stay away.

Watergum is a Queensland based not-for-profit environmental charity that has extensive knowledge and experience in pest management

Watergum works with community, business, government and private property owners to control invasive species.  Cane Toads present a threat to native species, pets and agriculture and as each female can produce up to 70,000 tadpoles each year, it is important that get them under control.

Watergum developed a revolutionary method of Cane Toad control that uses the toad’s own toxins against them. The lures are made from toxin in the Cane Toad glands.
